CHALCOPYRITE

Chalcopyrite, sometimes called Peacock Ore, is a metallic, brassy yellow copper iron sulfide that crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system. Its chemical formula is CuFeS2, or copper iron sulfide. It is a major ore of copper and is frequently found within sulfide veins. The name is derived from two Greek words, ‘chalkos’ and ‘pyrites ‘meaning copper and strikes fire. Weathering of chalcopyrite leads to the formation of other minerals, such as malachite, azurite, brochantite, and langite. Interestingly, this mineral also becomes magnetic when heated! Currently, it's a chief component in the development of modern electrical wiring; this is due to its high conductivity, softness (3.5 - 4 on Mohs Scale), and ability to resist corrosion.

CHALCOPYRITE HISTORY AND USES

Chalcopyrite has been mined in modern-day Serbia and Turkey as the primary source of copper since the smelting of metal began there in 5500 BCE. Additionally, the mineral was most likely the first copper ore to be used by the Sumerians of Mesopotamia in 3800 BCE. The name Chalcopyrite is derived from two Greek words, ‘chalkos’ and ‘pyrites’, meaning copper and strikes fire. Chalcopyrite was the most fundamental mineral upon which the Bronze Age civilizations were built; and within the last century, it has become the foundational mineral for our modern electrical age.

CHALCOPYRITE METAPHYSICS

Metaphysically, chalcopyrite is a crystal of the Crown Chakra. Considered a powerful energy conduit, it is said that chalcopyrite can be used to aid with the removal of stagnant energetic blockages, allowing for the establishment of free-flowing Qi. It is also said that the crystal can help to alleviate the burdens of past traumas, while creating building blocks of positive affirmations. A great stone for self-worth and self-esteem, chalcopyrite is said to help in facilitating the “glass half full” state of mind. Physically, chalcopyrite is said to aid the body with arthritis and inflammation, as well as help with dis-ease of the excretory organs and brain. Additionally, it is said that chalcopyrite can aid the body with afflictions of the mind, such as with memory loss attributed to Alzheimer’s.
